The 5 WalkMe alternatives we looked at were:
What is Digital Adoption?
Our founding team has used WalkMe for previous projects before we started HintEd. Although they are pioneers in Digital Adoption and have a great platform, they are not always the best tool for enterprises willing to transform their software training process.
Since we have experience in employee training and onboarding we know the real pains of companies when they are in search of the most suitable tool for transforming their training process in a more interactive and efficient way.
By the end of this review, you will be able to choose the best tool for software adoption and user support that suits all your business needs.

But before we start with the review, let's talk a bit about the pioneers of Digital Adoption Platforms — Walkme.
WalkMe at a glance — what they do.

WalkMe is a cloud-based platform that helps product managers and customer success managers to manage in-app experiences and create product tours.
They are one of the pioneers in Digital Adoption Platforms being trusted by large companies like Cisco, Microsoft, PayPal, and many others.
WalkMe is great and we respect them a lot, but what we see is that they are a bit complex and harder to implement compared to us. You'll need to have the patience to start working with them. Installing WalkMe inside your systems requires a lot of technical knowledge. You need to put a lot of effort just to get started with WalkMe and make lots of integrations.
WalkMe biggest strengths

  1. Powerful analytics. WalkMe dashboard allows analyzing employees' onboarding and software utilization data, and get insights.
  2. Great features for product tours, in-application walkthroughs, and tooltips.
  3. Enterprise-scale platform. Because of its functionality, WalkMe could be one of the best choices for large companies. But because of price, complexity, and technical requirements, it's not the best choice for small and medium companies or even large enterprises when they need a fast solution for the needs of software training.
1. HintEd — Fast and Secure Digital Adoption Platform.

HintEd is one of the top WalkMe alternatives for creating interactive on-screen guides to help employees master their software instantly.

HintEd enables companies to create personalized, trigger-based, context-aware onboarding and training processes for enterprise users. It helps to improve software adoption and reduce costs for software training and support.

HintEd key features

  • Product Tours
  • Feature Highlights
  • Hints and popups
  • Checklists
  • Tooltips
  • Analytics
  • Triggers automation
  • No-code
  • Self-help Centers
  • Affordable Pricing
  • Can be installed fully on-premises
  • Can work without integration
  • Walkthroughs for desktop applications
HintEd self-help widget and interactive on-screen guides work perfectly even in third-party software.
HintEd is more simple and faster to implement. Everything you need is to install our browser extension and put one snippet of JavaScript code inside your application. It can even work without integrating our snippets to your systems, using only chrome extensions. It also allows customizing your on-screen guides without using CSS.
HintEd also works with Windows applications!
And what is also cool in HintEd is that it works with desktop (windows) applications! Many companies still use desktop platforms and Windows applications. But HintEd can deal with it. HintEd Desktop allows creating a digital adoption layer above Windows app just like for web-based platforms. This helps companies in building a single interactive training strategy across all enterprise software.
HintEd summary

As we can see, HintEd could be one of the best fits for medium businesses and large enterprises. You can easily install HintEd in any web-based application or use it with legacy Windows applications in your without any development efforts and without any coding.

HintEd is really affordable compared to WalkMe. Instead of thousands of dollars per month, you can pay a few hundred dollars, our pricing starts at $199 per month and based on the number of employees in your company.

If you find HintEd as a great fit for you and your company to boost digital adoption, please contact us and get a demo.

2. Whatfix. Another good Walkme Alternative

Whatfix could also be a good alternative to Walkme when talking about onboarding employees to internal software. They provide good functionality that includes:

  • Product Tours
  • Feature Highlights
  • Hints and popups
  • Checklists
  • Tooltips

The installation of Whatfix is not very complex. You can use the Whatfix Chrome extension for creating guides, but to preview them there should be JavaScript snippet installed in your system. Not the best option.
Also, there's no information about their pricing and trial option on their website. Some sources say the pricing starts from $1 200 per year.

Customizing your tours can also be a bit tricky since you have to use CSS.
But the main cons is Whatfix support. Some people say they have difficulties reaching their technical support, but Whatfix has built a pretty big community of users who are always willing to help you, but still it's not the official Whatfix Customer Support.
Whatfix summary

Whatfix allows fast creation of in-application guides but it's a bit harder to customize your tours and get customer support. But still, Whatfix is a good alternative to Walkme for small and medium businesses. But you should be aware that implementing Whatfix can take weeks or even months.

3. Userlane — Strong Walkme Competitor from EU

We like Userlane. It has just the same main features that Walkme has. Their installation is pretty simple: you just need to copy and paste a JavaScript snippet to your product.
They have a really nice-looking walkthroughs editor. But the main cons is that they allow creating only walkthroughs.
But still, Userlane tracks all necessary analytics and gives insights on how these walkthroughs are used.

So, the core Userlane features are:
  • Product Tours
  • Feature Highlights
  • Checklists
  • Analytics
  • No-code
  • Self-help Centers
Userlane offers a trial version of the application. After it finishes, the pricing varies on the number of users you need Userlane for.
Userlane summary

If you're looking for a Walkme alternative that is not so confusing and complex, you should try Userlane. But be aware that with Userlane you can create only walkthroughs. It will work well with simple applications.

4. Gainsight PX — Training for Salesforce

Gainsight PX is a powerful suite of products for customer success and product experience. They have out-of-the-box integration with Salesforce but can also work with other web-based applications. Using Gainsight PX, you can create various in-app experiences to deliver the first Aha moments to users. Because of lots of analytical features, Gainsight may be the most ideal solution for measuring and tracking customer success, but not for creating super-effective user onboarding scenarios and in-app experiences.
Gainsight PX also has no clear pricing. But the good news is that they have a free plan for up to 100 users.
    Gainsight PX summary

If you're looking for a powerful customer success data solution, then Gainsight PX can be the only suitable tool. But if you need a WalkMe competitor allowing creating great employee and user onboarding scenarios, perhaps it's not the best match.
    5. Appcues — Beautiful no-code onboarding software

Appcues have pioneered various onboarding elements like hotspots and tooltips. Besides, they are one of the most widely-used tools on the market. They are good at creating nice-looking onboarding flows for SaaS services, but when it comes to creating complex training scenarios for business software, their editor may be not the best choice due to its scenario-creating mechanics. Creating and implementing guides in Appcues is more complex than the other competitors.
Appcues pricing starts at $249/month for a minimal package and that is pretty high. For the Growth package, they charge $879/month. And if you need enterprise-class training and onboarding, the price will be really high.
      Appcues summary

Appcues is great for creating stunning nice-looking onboarding scenarios for SaaS, but it can be tricky to create complex flows for training enterprise users. Their visual editor is nice but doesn't allow rapid content authoring. So if you're looking for a tool to cut your training costs it can be not the best choice.
So, what is the best Walkme alternative for your business?

Here's the WalkMe alternatives comparison table
If you are looking for a platform to track customer success and employee engagement and especially if you're using Salesforce, Gainsight is the best choice.

If you're looking for software that's similar to WalkMe but cheaper for creating only Walkthroughs, Whatfix or Userlane are both a great choice.

If you're looking for a solution to create better user onboarding for simple applications, Appcues should be your choice.

Finally, if you are looking for a simplified and faster-to-implement WalkMe alternative with the same functions for third-party employee onboarding solution with rich customization options, automated triggers, desktop applications support, and internal systems integration capabilities, HintEd is the only choice!
